Maffra and Sale teams among winners at basketball tournament

Maffra and Sale teams were among the winners at the first basketball tournament of the season, hosted by Korumburra.

Four Maffra teams won their grand finals, capping off undefeated weekends.

The Eagles’ under 10 girls defeated Traralgon 25-4 in the A grade grand final.

Maffra won the under 12 boys’ A grade final, 35-22 over Warragul with Nixon Killoran named most valuable player.

The Maffra under 14 boys won a thrilling B grade grand final against Warragul, 26-25, with Chev McMahon named MVP.

The Maffra under 19 boys defeated Moe 44-18 in their final. Marcus Proud was adjusted the MVP of the final.

Maffra lost under 14 girls’ A grade final to Warragul 26-14. The Eagles had closed the gap between the sides, having gone down to the Warrior 34-19 at the start of the tournament.

The Sale Sonics under 10 girls celebrated their first tournament win at Korumburra Saturday. For many it was the first tournament win of their basketball careers.

Meeting undefeated Warragul in the grand final, Sale trailed for the majority of the game, every Sale player doing their best to keep in contention for the win.

In the final minute, Emerson Grant and Emerson Bradley made one clutch foul shot each to tie the game then hit the lead. A three-point win was secured with a buzzer beater from Millie Sellars.

The girls celebrated their win with the help of a loud and supportive crowd of family members and friends. Bradley was awarded the MVP for the game.

The Sale under 16 boys also made it through to the grand final, going down to Warragul 63-34.
