Young sports people recognised at Gippstar Awards

STRATFORD’S Cohen Wade won the November Open Gippstar Award for his achievements in tetrathlon.

Cohen won the Senior Male National Tetrathlon Champion Title at the Pony Club Australia National Championship held in Swan Valley in Western Australia last October.

He competed in the 200m swim, three kilometre run, 2×5 laser shooting and a showjumping competition.

He won the shooting phase with the highest shoot score, placed third in the 3km run, had a good swim and a near-perfect ride score.

FULHAM’S Corey Buys also won a recent Gippstar Award, taking out the the December Open category.

Buys has been chosen to represent Australia in the 2024 Polocrosse World Cup. He will play in South Africa in June.

Buys is one in four men to have been chosen over thousands of players within Australia.

He has recently participated in two test matches against New Zealand, which they won, and a test match against a ‘Rest of the World’ team, which they also won.

OTHER recent Gippstar award winners were Finn Lipman of Traralgon, for his achievements in scootering.

Finn competed in the junior category of the World Scooter Championships, held in Sydney in October last year.

To ride in the championships, players were required to qualify by competing in the national competition.

The top riders were chosen to compete.

Out of the 66 competitors in his category, Finn came 33rd.

At the time, he was 11-years-old. Finn is ranked fourth in Australia in Under 12s.

There was joint winners of the November Gippsland awards.

Isabel Grylls (15) of Trafalgar East was recognised for her achievements in the sport of weightlifting.

Isabel won the Under 15 title at 71kg weight class, came second in the Youth (Under 17) weight class and won best overall under 15 female lifters at the AWF Under 15 and Youth Nationals in Perth.

James Denton, also 15, of Warragul, has had an outstanding time in athletics.

His most recent achievements are: 400m Under 15 Australian All Schools Champion; fourth at the Australian National Track and Field Championships; second in the State Little Athletics Championships, and second at the Victorian All Schools Championships.
