The local community was shocked to hear of the death of Nick Lowden last week at the age of 23.
Lowden was a prominent footballer, playing for Traralgon and Gippsland Power, before moving to the VFL with Casey Demons, Northern Territory with Darwin Buffaloes, and to Norwood Redlegs in the SANFL.
He played in the Redlegs premiership last season.
Taking to social media, Traralgon Football-Netball Club said the young man would be dearly missed.
“Nick was loved by many at the club, and our hearts and prayers go out to Nick’s family and his friends,” Traralgon FNC said.
“There are no words that could ever make this feel okay. Get around each other, take care of each other, and reach out and talk to someone. You’re never alone. Good times and dark times, we stand together.”
Traralgon FNC has offered counselling for players and officials, and opened their clubrooms on Tuesday night, with Gippsland Power chaplain David Hobbs joining them.
The South Australian National Football League also wised to express their condolences.
“The South Australian Football Commission and everyone at South Australian National Football League are incredibly saddened by the tragic and unexpected death of Norwood Football Club player Nicholas Lowden,” they said.
“Nick, aged 23, was a 2022 Premiership player for Norwood, having been recruited from Casey Demons in the Victorian Football League in late 2021. He played 22 League games for Norwood across two seasons with the club in 2022 and 2023.
“The midfielder’s valuable contribution to Norwood Football Club and the South Australian National Football League men’s league in his short time playing in South Australia will always be remembered.
“We send our heartfelt condolences and offer comfort and support to Nick’s family and friends, the players, coaches and staff of the Norwood Football Club and the extended football community at this difficult time.”
