COLLEGIANS took out the first-ever Sale-Maffra Cricket Association Women’s Twenty20 premiership on February 28.
College defeated Bundalaguah by 12 runs in the final.
Under grey evening skies at College Oval, Collegians won the toss and batted.
After the early losses of openers Tamara Hall and Lateshia Locker, a foundation was soon established by Acacia Sutton and Jazz Anstee, the pair’s smart running between the wickets added 37 runs to the total across eight overs.
College then lost three of their batters within eight balls, with Anstee bowled, Lily Hargraves given out leg-before, and Sutton reaching the automatic retirement score of 25.
Milla Grattan and Tilley Gordyn were next to form a stand, adding 18 runs between them in four overs before the former was caught behind.
A valuable five runs were added by both Beth Goodsell and Dawn Pfeil before the innings closed, with Collegians total at 8/78.
Megen Wrigglesworth finished her four overs with figures of 4/7, including two maidens.
Bundy began their chase following a quick break, by which time the light had dimmed significantly.
Tamara Hall struck early for Collegians in the second innings, trapping Corina Vogt on her pads first ball.
This dismissal brought Wrigglesworth to the middle, who struck three boundaries and built a partnership with Katelyn Robinson on her way to an unbeaten 25.
Robinson stayed for the remainder of the innings, but the tight bowling and aggressive fields of Collegians restricted her to 15 off 37 deliveries.
Her batting partners also struggled, all of whom were declared out for scores of four or less.
By the end of 20 overs, Bundy’s total was 7/66; Goodsell snagged three wickets, while Anstee took a catch off her own bowling and contributed to two run outs.
Despite being part of the losing side, Wrigglesworth was awarded Player of the Match for her outstanding contributions with both bat and ball.
The match was well-attended, with attendees greatly outnumbering the crowd seen at last Sunday’s Fischer Cup – over 50 cars parked around the oval’s permiter to watch the ladies play, with more faces seen near the College clubrooms.
Given that level of interest, the competition will surely return for a second season later this year.
