HISTORY will be made today in Yarram, with Yarram District Cricket Club set to play their first match on turf at the Yarram Recreation Reserve.
The Pelicans are scheduled to face Imperials in Round 14 of the Traralgon District Cricket Association.
When Yarram District first came into the TDCA after the Alberton Cricket Association disbanded, the Pelicans A Grade team had to play all away matches due to not having a turf wicket.
It is TDCA policy that A Grade matches are not to be played on synthetic wickets, and allowances were not going to be granted due to the TDCA not wanting Yarram District to become complacent, and instead be motivated to install a turf wicket.
A lack of motivation has never been an issue for the new club, and in only three years they have managed to install a massive 6.5 wicket bench as well as full irrigation.
This is not the first time Yarram has had a turf wicket, with the local school installing one many years ago.
Yarram is now able to host A Grade matches as well as finals and even Gippsland Cricket League fixtures, which is a massive boost for the TDCA and for the township as well.
The first ball on the new turf will be bowled at 12 noon today.
Those in the Pelicans B Grade will not have to wait long to play on the grass, as they are rostered on this Sunday.
