GIPPSLAND United Men swept the Wallan Panthers to earn a Grand Final berth in their first year back in the Big V competition.

In front of a massive home crowd at the Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium (GRISS), Gippsland completely smothered the visitors on the defensive end of the floor, not allowing them to get into their offensive sets.

United coach Scott McKenzie was really pleased that the execution of the defensive game plan was applied so well, providing the springboard to the comprehensive 41 point win.

All 12 of the Gippsland men hit the scoreboard on Saturday night, with Brandon Armstrong leading the team.

Armstrong was influential throughout the night with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and six steals.

His swarming defence and active hands provided a great spark.

United doubled the visitors in rebounds and steals in the game.

Solid contributions came from Stephen O’Brien, Jordan Canovan (14 points each), Ben Barlow (10 points, four steals) and Kody Tibballs (nine points, seven rebounds). Jordan Gooiker was also fantastic during the game.

With his talent and scoring ability, he looks to be a key player in the Grand Final Series.

United will play the Pakenham Warriors for the Div2 title.

The title is decided in a Best of 3 Game Series, with the first to be played this Saturday at Cardinia Life Stadium, Pakenham, from 6pm.

Game two will be played at GRISS on Saturday, September 3.

If required, a third game to decide the title will be held on Sunday, September 4 at GRISS.
