Wellington Shire Council has fast tracked the renewal of Seagull Drive boat ramp in Loch Sport, addressing community concerns over its deteriorating condition.

The decision follows storm damage in August which had worsened coastal erosion along the foreshore, emphasising the need for urgent action.

In recent months, council officers have worked closely with the state Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) to understand the challenges and find a viable solution, keeping the Loch Sport community informed throughout the process.

To ensure the ramp is accessible for the Christmas and New Year holiday season, council will soon begin a two-stage renewal with the first stage to be funded entirely by council, and subject to confirmation, it will largely fund the second stage, along with grant funding from Better Boating Victoria.

Stage one, led by local company Carter Marine, will involve removing the old ramp and laying a rock foundation to support new pre-cast concrete panels similar to those used at Seacombe boat ramp. Subject to external approvals, this phase is scheduled for completion before Christmas.

Stage two, planned for the 2025-26 financial year and subject to budget approval from the newly-formed council, will focus on enhancing the ramp’s approach, abutment, and structural support.

Materials from stage one will be reused and the ramp is scheduled to be completed by June 2026.

Following the decision on immediate renewal works, Wellington Shire Council chief executive David Morcom said remedying the Seagull Drive boat ramp was a top priority for council and it was pleased work was underway.

“We appreciate the Loch Sport community’s patience as we’ve worked through the challenges of the erosion issue with state government agencies. We are pleased to have reached an agreement to move this project forward, improving a beloved spot for both locals and visitors in our shire,” Mr Morcom said.

Council officers are currently working with DEECA to fast-track the required Marine and Coastal Act consent. DEECA has committed to expediting the process, helping to ensure the ramp is fully operational for the holiday season.

The project team have also liaised with the Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation to ensure cultural considerations are respected.
