THE state government’s budget commitment to support future quail and duck hunting highlights strategic investment in hunting regulation and compliance, but diverges from a recommended ban following a parliamentary inquiry.

If anti-duck hunting advocates were hoping for the government to change course and ban the activity, the $11.6 million pledged in the budget to continue it would like to have a word for you.

The investment for the continuation of quail and duck shooting, includes support for the Game Management Authority. This is to ensure hunters are complying with regulations.

The money also goes towards hunting regulation review and reform, which is the action the state government took after the parliamentary inquiry into duck shooting, rather than a ban as the inquiry recommended.

Minister for Outdoor Recreation Steve Dimopoulos said: “Whether it’s taking in one of our epic major events or a weekend away with friends, our state has so much to offer – and we’re making sure everyone knows it,” he said.
