The Victorian Animal Justice Party (AJP) has reacted positively to Budget measures, including animal programs and the early shutdown of the native forestry industry.

“The Eastern Victoria Branch of the Animal Justice Party has welcomed a number of Budget initiatives including those secured by our Animal Justice Party MP for Northern Victoria, Georgie Purcell,” Austin Cram, the AJP Regional Group Leader for Eastern Victoria, said (pictured above).

“That includes over $9 million to support community vets, shelters and animal rescues; $10 million for revegetation projects and another $9 million for wildlife protection programs including a new Victorian wildlife hospital.

“An early end to native logging is a great result for Gippsland’s native animals, including so many vulnerable and endangered species, but it remains to be seen if the Labor government’s touted ongoing support to our local workers will materially help our communities transition into other sectors, we hope they do.

“That said, there’s still so much more the government could be doing to support animals, people and our planet and so many families in our region are struggling. We will continue to push the government to be better where we can.”

AJP parliamentarian and Member for Northern Victoria, Georgie Purcell credited the “tireless work of communities, activists, and lawyers advocating for the protection of these important native habitats” for the early shutdown of the timber industry

“State forest groups in my electorate are amongst those who never gave up – and I am so proud of you all. This win is yours,” Ms Purcell said.

“But especially, it’s a win for our precious native animals and the habitats they call home.”
