Briagolong Art Gallery’s new gumtree exhibit

BRIAGOLONG Art Gallery is set to host its latest exhibition: My Friend the Gum Trees by Glenn Finlay.

Opening today (Saturday), the exhibition features both two-dimensional and sculptural works, revealing the unassuming beauty of our iconic gum trees.

“The iconic gum tree is a powerful symbol of our land and so comforting and familiar it’s like an old friend who’s always there,” Mr Finlay said.

“In my art I love to explore and capture the Australian bush and try to create a feeling of intimacy for the viewer by getting up close and amongst the subject.

“In my larger works I have explored the birds eye view of the creatures that live in the trees, or a child who’s climbing up into the branches.

“My watercolours explore the delicate beauty of gumtrees; their diversity of shape, colour and texture.

“With timber, I have taken discarded slabs from century old fences and used building materials and shaped them to highlight the beautiful grain hidden within the very heart of the tree.

“I want this exhibition to show my respect and love of these trees; to be a positive exploration of the timeless beauty of gum trees while they battle for survival in a world of fire, floods and extreme environmental challenges.”

My Friend the Gum Trees is open Saturday, April 1 from 2pm.

After opening, the exhibition will be shown at the Gallery until May 7.
