ROTARY Club of Maffra was recently able to provide Maffra Neighbourhood House with the means to expand their food program.

Maffra Neighbourhood House keeps a food pantry to assist people in the community who are struggling to put food on the table.

After supporting their Christmas Hamper drive 2022 it came to the attention of the Rotary Club of Maffra that the house was in need of a freezer.

With some of the money raised at the Maffra Mardi Gras in March of this year, the club was able to donate a sizeable freezer which is currently in use and packed with frozen meals and perishables.

Maffra Neighbourhood House manager, Leahn Bulmer said the addition of the freezer allows them to provide healthier food options.

“We now have frozen cooked meals, vegetables and bread rather than relying just on canned and packet foods. We are also trying to start up a regular community lunch program which will assist people to have a healthy meal,” she said.

In October, Neighbourhood House is starting up its 2023 Christmas Hamper program.

Donations of shelf stable, new, unopened and in-date food to put into the hampers will be gratefully received, especially something a little festive such as mince pies, bon bons and candy canes. With their new freezer, the house will now also be able to provide bread, as it can be frozen.

“We are very grateful to the Rotary Club of Maffra for supporting us and for giving us the means to assist more people in need in our Maffra community,” Ms Bulmer said.

The freezer bears a plaque showing that it was a donation from the Rotary Club of Maffra.
