WEST Sale Bowls Club donated $500 to the Central Gippsland Health (CGH) Oncology Unit in memory of one of their members who recently died from cancer.

Past player, Kim Lonsdale, was treated at the CGH Oncology unit before succumbing to her battle with cancer in March. Other club members have also had family treated for cancer at CGH Oncology.

“With this in mind, we chose to donate the funds locally, rather than to a national entity,” club secretary Kerry Binotto said.

“It’s a hospital close to many of our hearts and it was an obvious choice for us to raise money for this valuable local service in Kim’s name.”

The money was raised during a special bowling day that saw members playing with their partners, some of which had never bowled but were willing to try for this worthwhile cause.

Kerry said members paid green fees and a ‘fine jar’ captured gold coin donations throughout the day.

CGH Director Medical Services, Dr Divyanshu Dua, said he was humbled by the donation that would support the oncology unit to improve its care of cancer patients.

“People don’t often realise how much of a boost local fundraising can be to their local health service,” Dr Dua said.

“We are very honoured that the care we provide in oncology has been recognised in this way.”

West Sale Bowls Club has around 80 members ranging in age from mid-40 to over 90, proving you are never too young or old to play.

Lawn bowls is played all through summer while social bowls is played in winter.

There is also a bocce rink and clubhouse available for hire to the general public for events.
