The weekend just passed (October 28-31) witnessed the return of the Victorian Sculpture Prize to Sale, and with it, artist Andre Sardone – a maker of “unusual and unexpected things”.

In 2021, Mr Sardone won the inaugural Victorian Sculpture Prize with his artwork entitled Shimmering Penny Tree, which was subsequently acquired by Wellington Shire. It currently sits within the Sale Botanic Gardens.

Winning the award was a huge boost to Mr Sardone’s art practice and opened the door to many an opportunity, resulting in a busy 12 months for the Bendigo-based artist.

He came back to Sale for the 2022 Prize, entering one large sculpture and five smaller pieces. A theme of his work over many years has been the organic-shaped series of “Pods”, inspired by natural forms in the forest that surrounds his home.

His large-scale “Mega Pod” competed for the $20,000 main prize, in which it competed against a range of other amazing artworks.

“The Victorian Sculpture Prize is a great opportunity to show some recent work in a lovely setting, and it is nice to have the chance to meet and mingle with other sculptors from all over Victoria,” Mr Sardone said.

“It is wonderful that the Wellington Shire is so supportive of the arts.”
