CLIENTS and crew from Stratford’s Overcoming Obstacles gifted Sale a Christmas surprise on Wednesday, December 20 by unleashing flash mobs and dancing along to Christmas songs.
Overcoming Obstacles provides support for people with disability and mental health challenges.
“Why a flash mob? Why not? We wanted to spread some Christmas cheer,” Director of Overcoming Obstacles, Rachael Nicholls said.
“Our crew performed at three different places. They started at the Port of Sale and then worked their way through to the clock tower and then finished at the Gippsland Centre.
“They’re led by a lady called Christabel Peters, and she’s from an organisation called GROOV3MENT that teaches dance and performing arts to people with disabilities.”
Ms Nicholls said she was proud of their crew for performing Christmas carols and dances.
“They’ve been working really hard for the last 10 weeks and having a lot of fun,” she said.
“We want to educate people in the community about what people with disability are capable of.”
Songs performed were ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’ and ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’.
The crowds and kids who saw the flash mobs joined in on the fun, giving it their all with their own singing and dancing.
Ms Nicholls said that while Christmas is a joyous time for their clients at Overcoming Obstacles, it can be also be challenging for some of them.
“They may not have family and friends to spend Christmas with so we just try to keep up the Christmas spirit,” she said.
Throughout Stratford and over Christmas, Overcoming Obstacles put up Christmas decorations and volunteered their time at Segue (Stratford’s Neighbourhood House).
