SALE Film Society is inviting everybody to get into the Halloween spirit by attending its outdoor screening of An American Werewolf in London on Friday evening, weather permitting.
Directed by John Landis, the 1981 horror-comedy has earned a reputation as a classic of both genres.
“While you could see it as a horror movie, it’s really a bit more silly than a truly scary film, which we wouldn’t schedule,” Society secretary Gerard Callinan said.
“It pokes fun at some of the things you’ll regularly see in horror films and is also laugh-out-loud funny in parts.
“We hope people will come along and enjoy the fun.”
The picture is one of the many successes in Landis’ career, who also directed Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places and the music-video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
Mr Callinan believes that Werewolf is up there as one of Landis’ best works.
“I think most people would see The Blues Brothers as his most iconic film, but Werewolf isn’t far behind,” Mr Callinan said.
The Society’s screening of An American Werewolf in London will take place on the grass between its traditional home of The Wedge and the Port of Sale.
Originally scheduled for October 28, the event has been brought forward by one week so as not to clash with other public events happening on the evening.
It will now occur this Friday, October 21 from 8.15pm.
“This is a free community event not limited to Society members, so we hope to see a good crowd for what should be a fun night,” Mr Callinan said.
Attendees are advised to bring their own outdoor furniture and rug-up for the weather: “If La Niña does its thing, there is no Plan B!”
Dressing in spooky attire is strongly encouraged.
